In the trenches …

When I first started offering my services as a copywriter online you could count on your fingers the number of other copywriters who were advertising, say, in Google Adwords. Now there are a ton of new blood that have invaded the online arena trying to get into the game.  This has really clouded the field and it gets harder to choose a copywriter who will really deliver the goods.  There are many great offline copywriters who have practically moved their businesses online and are making a ton of money from teaching other wannabee copywriters how to write copy.

So what is a potential client to do?

Well, the easiest thing is to ask for a portfolio and the past results that the copywriter has achieved. You cannot judge from a fancy sales letter anymore because any new kid on the block can post a website in a few hours.  But it takes a lot of time in trenches to really produce copy that make businesses rich.

Now there are many copywriters who would hide their inexperience behind a screen of “if you want to see samples send me an email” clause.  They are really hoping that you do not ask! That is why I’m right upfront by posting my samples right online where potential clients can read for themselves and see if they really want to work with me.  In the early days when I first started this business I worked on the cheap in order to build a portfolio fast.  I knew that clients would trade the low price for my lack of experience even though they made back their investment in a very short time–sometimes in just one mailing.

So if you are in the market for a copywriter, make sure that you ask to see their portfolio before you commit your money.  It’s just the sensible thing to do.
